Thomas T-30 oil less Pancake style compressor
by J.C.Hoover (Wichita, Kansas) April 6th, 2009
I first purchased a Thomas T-30 oil-free compressor back in 1984 and it was revolutionary engineering at the time, using the wobble piston for compression. This oil-less compressor with its pancake style tank is as compact and lightweight as a rugged portable compressor can be. The electrical current draw is under 12 amps so can be used with 100 foot extension cords with no problems. I'm a commercial journeyman trim carpenter I use this compressor on many jobs it will power two finish nailers and three pin nailers all at the same operation with little effort, and can be stored in the jobox at the end of the day without taking up all the space. This machine is the quietest compressor I've seen or heard and the fact that its oil-less triples its value to me. The T-30 I purchased in 1984 is still running like a top and has out lived three pressure gages two pet cocks and a regulator, the only maintenance I've ever preformed over the 25 years of service, is change the air filter. This older compressor developed a corrosion pin hole in the tank after 25 years and a replacement tank was about half the cost of a new compressor. The new T-30 I purchased has a tank that is twice the metal thickness of the 84 model. Cost ratio about $1.34/ month over 25 years. Anyone else out there have a portable compressor thats used regularly with 25 years service? This Thomas compressor is an Exellent product!

Best Tool Ever.!!!!!!!!!!
I bought my first Thomas compressor back in 1983, red in color. I used it on housing tracks doing production interior trim with a crew for many years. This compressor can handle 3 nail guns working all day long. Hanging doors, closet trim, baseboards, crown molding, cabinets. It worked for me doing items such as texuring with a hand held hopper, fences, roofs, exterior siding, also used it for auto use with air tools & a neighbor borrowed it to paint his car with it. This commpressor has sat outside in the rain, works even laying on it side. Been knocked around in the bed of my truck, dropped, spray painted, loaded job materials on top of it. It's been ran into by my vehicle sitting in the garage, I've used it with 150ft extention cord, It's been rebuilt and/or worked on numerous times (Easy to work on) and I still have it today and it's still working. I have been in construction for 29 years. There are cheaper compressors on the market, but when it comes to making a living and having to rely on equipment day after day it pays to get the best and Thomas compressor's are the best. Strong, Durable, Made in the USA. Parts are easy to find including my now 24 year old compressor, try that with other compressors. Would I buy again- YES!!!!!!!!!

If you want a compressor that will last........
Hi, I'm an interior trim carpenter and I have only praise for this compressor. This tool will start in cold weather ,or on the end of a 100 foot lamp cord plugged into a 15 amp outlet, it's quiet and it lasts and lasts and lasts. This compressor should out live any home owner. As with any quality tool......they don't give em' away.

takes a licking
I purchased my Thomas in 1984. Im a finish carpenter and this unit was used a lot, many times running 3 finish guns. The other guys had the loudest compressors known to man. I kept it in the back of my truck with a chain thru the leg and a padlock, it was the first thing theives wud try to steal, often had it hanging out the side of the truck after the chain grew tight. I only have a few complaints and that is the plastic handle broke soon after I got it, and the guages all broke off as they are not protected by any kind of cage. Anyway the thing finally gave it up the other day, made some hellacous noise then just kept running but wudnt pump air, Hell its 27 yrs old, shud I try to repair it or just get a new one? But im 55 yrs old do I really need something that will out last me? Haha. Im looking at the 1/2 horsepower hotdog unit but darn their out of stock. In the meantime im using this Cambell Housfield unit that will literaly blow ur ears out, I set the damn thing out in the yard and run a feeder house inside and shut the door. My Thomas wud be inside and u cud actually hav a conversation with the homeowner with it running. My unit was red and only 1 horsepower, I noticed they bumped up the power a bit but mine had all the power u cud need and wud run off of small generators wen other compressors wudnt. So yea I wud recomend.

Editorial Review :
The DEWALT D55151 Hot Dog Compressor has all the power of a large compressor, but constructed as a smaller, lighter unit. It delivers 3.2 cubic feet per minute at 100 psi and is durably built with oil-lubricated cast-iron cylinder. Included with the Hot Dog Compressor are a 2/8 inch regulator and an initial fill of DEWALT synthetic air compressor oil.

Dewalt Air Compressor
The Dewalt air compressor arrived on time and performs as expected. I have enjoyed using the item and, with general maintenance, I expect it to last for many years to come.

DeWALT Twin Hot Dog "Top Dog"
We just added on an extra room and used the DeWALT for all framing, trim, exterior siding, roof etc etc. This is one great compressor for a number of uses. No problems here. All the air tools we attached to it the DeWALT never skipped a beat. Am very happy with mine and am sure you will be too. I also use it in my garage to keep the maintenance up on my vehicles. Air tools I use are no problem with this compressor.

Good compressor, once kinks are worked out!!!
I bought this compressor after the one I had died on me. I did not have any packaging problems or issues and it worked fine. Major problem for me is that it requires to be plugged into an outlet and an extension cord should not be used. I used an extension cord (properly rated) and it did not provide enough power, it would start up then make a whining noise and did not pressurize. I consulted Dewalt Service Store to determine what the problem was and they said it worked fine with them. I did some research on my own and through trouble shooting, I determined it was the power, now I run a longer hose so the compressor can sit by the outlet, not a major issue and it has been working fine since then. Not a lot of info on Dewalt website for trouble shooting, found the website [...] to be useful in resolving my issue.

cold weather operation a problem
I bought this compressor cause it was lighter than most with a good reputation, however being a carpenter and using it in all weathers in the northeast just doesnt work it wont start!!! had to buy an oilfree would not recommend it .

Great for the money!
I have used a wide range of compressors in renovations and remodels. I strongly recomend a oil-type compressor. the first one I owned was oil-free and it only lasted about a year. as long as you check your oil level and color before every use and change when you notice the break down of the oil (brown in color don't wait till it turns black) you compressor will last a DIY a life time. where oil-free compressors piston rings naturaly wear down over time and will require a rebuild. Not a good compressor for a crew it will not handle more than 2 framing guns (cfms to low)but 1 gun or 2 if not going nuts, will keep up all day. If running continiously drain tank every hour to save tools or after every use, small tanks=lots of moisture.

Thomas t-636hd hot dog compressor
This thing is great! Light weight, which makes it very portable, enough umph to keep the nails flowing. It
could have a little larger carrying handle, but I have very large hands. This is a winner.

kinda load - Thomas has good tech support
Received as expected, actually a day early thanks Amazon, the compressor is very well packed for shipping. Upon set-up and adding a regulator, all seems fine -but it is much much louder then expected, it seems to have blown the pressure switch after 4.5 hours, it will not hold air. I'm now trying to get a reply from Thomas on where to take it or send it back for repair,I would like to resolve this as the compresser is a great size for one gun use... Thomas Tech did return my call - worked with me on phone to try & fix problem, he overnighted the replacement part and upon installation everything is up & running - good tec support, this has caused it to quiet a little

Compressors/Thomas T-635HD
Light weight, dependable; and quiet! This is what I was looking for in a compressor...and this is why I specifically went looking for Thomas Compressors.
I worked on a top notch remodeling company restoring historical houses, and a carpenter used one on everything from framing, to trim work, rain or shine Thomas kept up...Since then I have been waiting for my Emglo to get retired so I too can be a proud owner of a Thomas T-635HD
One thing that I did not like when my Thomas T-635HD arrived was a real lack of directions to assemble the few parts that did need to be put on before operation, but anyone with common knowlege of compressors will figure it out.
Also a FYI for those ordering... REMEMBER!!! to get a pressure control valve, and all the connections you will need to mount a hose coupler; because these items do not come with the tool.
This compressor is not intended for HIGH-PRODUCTION ie... nail-off on sheeting, production framing or sand-blasting... if you are in the market for a compressor that is small, light;and dependabley quiet... Your search has ended here !
Don't get fooled by tool packs that come with nail gun, air-hose and compressor in one deal you will be looking for a new compressor soon.

Small, light, and reliable
I have larger compressors and wanted something lighter to take on small remodeling jobs. This compressor has delivered as promised. It does not have a lot of storage or pump volume, so if you have hose leaks, or go to blow off something, you notice yourself waiting. I wish that the compressor had come with a regulator. This seems to be a quality tool that a frequent user could justify the cost of through reliability and longevity. Time will tell if oil-less technology will endure. I do apreciate not worrying about oil leaks or the fan spraying oil on customer's walls and carpets. Cold-weather starts are much better.

Light weight professional grade compressor for small jobs
I was looking for a portable and not overly loud air compressor, for my low air-volume tools. I had a 4-gallon pancake compressor for several years, but at 70 lbs., it was just too heavy and bulky to lug around. Sold it and purchased the inexpensive Sears Craftsman model 15210, a 2 gallon, oil unit. The Sears unit came with numerous accessories and was only 40 lbs. -- much more portable than the pancake unit. Unfortunately, it was also VERY noisy, so it was returned.
My third attempt at a portable was the winner. The Thomas 3/4 HP model, at 26 pounds, is so lightweight that I can comfortably pick it up with TWO fingers. It's also very small: 16" long, 17.5" high, and 7" deep. Quality is first rate. Although it hardly qualifies as "quiet", it isn't nearly as noisy as other compressors I've heard. I installed a 16" stainless steel braided faucet plumbing hose on the compressor's air-outlet port; routed the hose out the back under the motor support, and screwed on a quick disconnect coupling. First thing that gets plugged into the quick-disconnect is a regulator, since none comes with the unit. This setup works fine. Because the tank is only 2 gallons (to keep weight/bulk down), the pump comes on more often than on larger units, but when it does, it's only on for about 12 seconds (if you're not using air). The unit comes on when pressure drops below 100 PSI and goes off at 125 PSI.
Thomas's Perma-Lube pump design results in a 100% duty cycle. Translation: the compressor can be used continuously, without letup. Some compressors have only a 50% duty cycle, which means you shouldn't run it more than 30 minutes for every hour used, as that could cause excessive wear on the pump and/or motor. The last thing I need to worry about when working on a project is giving my tools a rest.
You'd want a bigger unit if you had two roofing or stud-nailers going, but for low-air-volume requirements such as trim work, this little Thomas unit is just about perfect. If you can afford the best and need a truly portable machine, this is it.
September 2006 update:
While working on a home renovation project, the compressor's low air pressure switch clicked, but the motor didn't start. By the time I got to the compressor, the motor was smoking, literally. Perhaps there was low voltage to that particular outlet in that 46-year-old house. In any case, the little Thomas had sat there for a few minutes just humming; and overheated. Am wondering if the motor would have burned out had I not gotten to it in time. As hot as it was, it should have shut off by itself, but maybe it lacks over-heating circuitry. After it cooled, I plugged it into an outlet on another circuit and it worked fine.

Question : Kohler engine CV674 - Froze up
I have a Craftsman 48" GT300 with a Kohler CV764-75544 Engine. I have had it about 8 years and have kept up with the maintanence. It began blowing a white/bluish smoke when operating - smoke increased upon applying load of mowing. I contacted a local lawnmower repair man and spoke to him concerning the issue. He advised me that this may be due to needing new filters. So, I did a complete service/tune-up on the engine before spring (new plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter, and oil/lube). Then the other day I was mowing (for the second time since tune-up), more smoke and then...the engine froze up and now will not turn over. Common sense tells me this does not sound good. Please adivse on where to go from here.
Answer:
If it froze, the best thing is to either replace the entire engine or replace the entire mower. Whichever is most cost-effective at this point. I expect it spun a bearing or cracked a ring at some point accounting for the blue smoke and eventually doing it in.

Question : I have 7 year old Sears Craftsman Snow Blower. Model C950-52915 -0
It is 7 yrs. old and has been used 7 times. I would like to change the oil, but cannot find the drain plug. Logically, it would be under the oil crankcase, but it is not. HELP The oil is getting dirty, and I don't want to take it to a lube shop. The Owner's manual does not show a drain plug, only the filler cap. Anybody in the same boat
Answer:
Mine's about the same age - model C950-52021 - 0.The drain plug is below the throttle lever and the pull cord / recoil assembly. It's between them - and about 2" below. It's a 6 sided - one inch long bolt that screws into the engine. You'll have to tilt the blower back on the handles to drain the oil. Recommended oil is 5W30 for temps down to 0 F. Below that, sythetic 0W30 is recommended.
