Questions & Answers
Question : Is an air compressor a necessity in the car?
Ours, which is only two years old, is busted. I would like our air conditioner to work again, but it's not a necessity right now. Does the air compressor do anything else? We can't really afford to get it replaced right now.

Answer:
It depends what has failed. If the bearing is bad you'll have to replace it, since that pulley turns all the time, whether the air is on or not.zxc

Question : What is a good safe level to set my air compressor when dusting computers?
I got tired of spending $10+ a month on canned air, so I bought an Air Compressor and the nozzle attachment with a trigger. I was told not to allow the compressor to shoot out too much air because it may damage the computer parts. What is a safe level to set the compressor (PSIs)?

Answer:
This is too good a question to pass up, so here goes,You either have a thousand computers to clean or you are in a terrible location (dust wise). So I figgered, heck, you can always use the compressor to use a pneumatic jackhammer when the dust gets so packed that ya gotta use it to loosen the petrified dust.Talk about over stocking mechanical supplies for something simpler. That's like getting a bulldozer to dig a small hole in the sand.;-)

Question : My Air Compressor releases cold and low pressure, how do I fix this?
I have a two stage IR STATIONARY AIR COMPRESSOR 13HP. When its cold at night the air compressor pressure goes very slow even when i release all the air and water in the condensation tank. The pressure that comes out of the air lines to move the air tool is so slow that the air tool does not move. How do i solve this problem when I am working in the cold weather.

Answer:
Check to see if your regulator is frozen or damaged. You can do this by taking it off, and connecting the hose with out it.

Question : What type of pneumatic nailer and air compressor do I use to install crown molding?
I am putting up crown molding and I want to use a nail gun. I also want to get an air compressor that is not too cheap that I can put in my work shop for future projects. I may do some roofing in the future. What type of air compressor should I get? What type of nail gun for the crown molding? I am on a budget. So I don't want to spend any more than I have to.

Answer:
A small kit cost about $ 200.00 Can, the brad nailer is good enough for crown just use a little liqud nails the brads will hold the crown in place, the nailer should take up to 1.3/4 nails anyway

Question : What kind of Air Compressor do I need to remove lug nuts?
Hello,I want to invest of buying an Air Compressor to remove lug nuts of my car. What kind of Air Compressor, CFM, HP, how many gallons and PSI do I need? Also, do I need pneumatic or just air compressor does it make a difference? Thank you in advance.

Answer:
Not quite sure what your asking with the pneumatic thing? Pneumatic means filled with air, or using air.As far as a compressor that will remove lug nuts a 2 or 3 HP with a 20 or so gallon tank will work fine. You need to read what the gun you plan on using needs to work the best. Then buy a compressor that covers that and a little more. Most 1/2 drive impacts use between 60 and 90 PSI. As far as CFM they are all different, read the guns recommendations. Keep in mind you get what you pay for when it comes to impact guns. a $70 or $80 piece of crap is just that. Inexpensive and still has power to break rusted bolts lose is going to run in the $150 to $250.

Question : Should an Air Compressor blow off excess pressure at the crankcase?
I have a used 2 stage air compressor powered by an 5hp electric motor via a drive belt. The compressor is a two stage, it has a V shaped pump with one large and one small cylinder head. The large cylinder head has a small metal line coming from the top of the head, comes down and enters the crankcase via a fitting. The small cylinder head also has a line coming from the top of it's head and comes down and enters the through the side of the crankcase. The fitting that connects this line to the crankcase blows out air when the compressor is on. A friendly know-it-all said it was supposed to be this way to blow off excess pressure, but that doesn't make sense to me. Should this line (about the diameter of a metal brake line on a car) make an airtight seal where it enters the side of the pump crankcase or is this fitting designed to blow off excess pressure inside the crankcase? The compressor does shut off when psi reaches 100. The fittings on the line in question are tight. There is a threaded hole in the side of the crankcase, a square fitting with threaded rounded corners fits between the crankcase and the line coming from the secondary cylinder. I thought I once read that the crankcases on some air pumps are pressurized to reduce piston blowby, and I can see this being used for that, but if that's the case it seems there shouldn't be a strong blast of air coming from the fitting on the side of the crankcase. Again, it's a round hole with a square threaded adapter, and because you have a square inside a circle, you have open space around the side of the square for air to escape. This is the way we got the compressor, so I don't know if this is the way it came or someone just didn't have the right parts to repair it at one time. TY

Answer:
Yes, this compressor is operating correctly. Some compressors operate with automatic stop/start controls, which shut the compressor off when the proper pressure is reached. Other compressors have constant speed controls which uses a pneumatic (air) control line connected to a device which will hold the intake valves open to prevent more air pressure from building up once the desired pressure has been reached. This type of compressor will run in an "idle" mode when it has reached the proper pressure, and it will go back to normal compression mode when the pressure drops. Also, some larger compressors have the ability to bleed off the pressure from the top of the cylinder upon shutting down, so that the compressor motor will not have to start up under a large load. Unless you are simply talking about a loose fitting, there does not seem to be a problem with your machine.

Question : What kind of air compressor is good for me?
I have been working on cars for a while with basic tools, no power tools really. Now I want to start doing body work and just have air tools to make it all easier. So I would like to have an overall air compressor that can handle everything. I don't know quite much on the subject, but I am currently reading up on it. So I'm just curious, what should I look for? What should the CFM be to handle all the tools I want? How big of a tank should I get?

Answer:
At least a 20 gallon tank, 30 would be better. Total up the CFM requirements of the tools you're looking to buy, then get a compressor that will handle those requirements. What you're asking is too broad to answer with any certainty.

Question : How do i use an air compressor?
im trying to fill up a blow up boat and i know you can use an air compressor to fill it up but i cant remember how?

Answer:
If your air compressor has a service hose, that is the line that you hook your air tools onto, you need an attachment which will be able to inject the air into the boat. Either a tyre pump attachment or if you have one a pistol grip type air blower.Once you are set up with the correct bits the boat will have an air fill valve with either a screw cap over it or a plug.Simply turn your air compressor on to charge the cylinder and stick the filling jobbie into the fill valve and pull the trigger. The boats take a lot of air so your air compressor will kick in and probably keep running untill the boat is inflated. Stop filling every 5 minutes or so and let the compressor fill with air and shut down as the little compressor motors get fairly hot.Happy boating.

Question : Where do I take an air compressor to get repaired?
I have an air compressor that can't build up any pressure. The pump runs, but the pressure stays near zero. I can't figure out where to take it for repairs. I've called a lawn mower shop, a pump repair shop, and an electrical repair shop. None of them work on air compressors. Any ideas?

Answer:
1 look in owners manual..they have service/repair places listed or # to call2 no book? yahoo/google search the neme brand3 phone book4 unless its a 500+ priced compressor its usually not worth repairing..

Question : What tools can i use with an air compressor?
Im getting an air compressor but i dont know much about them.....like what should of tools should i get. i dont know if i should get a 60 gallon tank or maybe something smaller.

Answer:
60 gallon??? Way too big for most things around the house. Somewhere between 2 and 5 is plenty if you are going to use nail guns or automotive tools. One thing I find to be awesome is a "palm nailer" which I use when nailing into tight places, like joist hangers on floor trusses. It's like a leather glove with a metal tube on the palm, you put the nail head first into the tube, and like a pneumatic joy buzzer it effortlessly pounds the nail into the hole of the joist hanger. It will nail it anywhere but that's where I find it most useful.
